“Grammy” is the sweetest sound
It was such a simple moment, but it was the highlight of my day. There’s something about being a Grammy that words can’t fully capture. It’s the joy of watching your children parent, the sweetness of being loved by little ones without condition, and the blessing of being someone’s safe place.
Lilly’s hug reminded me that these fleeting moments matter more than anything else. The dishes, the errands, the endless to-do lists, they all fade away when a child you love so deeply comes running into your arms. Elijah’s little smile and giggle and him initiating a game of peek-a-boo means just as much.
My older grandchildren, Delaney (aka Buggy) and Collin (aka Deedoo) are twelve and thirteen. Stepping into their teenage years, I don’t see them as often. Life is busier now with them having friends and activities and their own growing independence, as it should be. But, even a simple text from them, a little “Hi Grammy” or “love you” means just as much to my heart as Lilly’s hug did today. Those small connections remind me that no matter their age, the bond between us is still there, steady and strong.
Then there are my 3 grandkids who live in Florida. I can’t be there for every park visit, every hug or every special occasion, but the gift of Face Time bridges the distance. Seeing Noelle (aka Poppy) dance with endless energy or recite a memorized scripture to me, Britton (aka Ducky McFarland) showing me how he has learned to do a new puzzle, telling me the names of all the shapes he has mastered or flashing his dimples and giggling so hard that he can’t tell me the joke he is trying to tell me. Then there is Miss Finnley girl, the one with the hilarious expressions, the one who calls to talk to Oscar and Grumpy, then back to me.
Seeing their smiles on my iPad screen, hearing about their day and watching them grow, even from afar, fills my heart with joy. Technology will never replace being with them in person, but it gives me a window into their lives and for that I am grateful.
These moments, whether it’s a hug in the park, a game of peek-a-boo, a quick text or a FaceTime call, remind me that being “Grammy” is more than a name. It’s indescribable, and today it was the most beautiful sound in the world.
I thank God every day for the priceless gift of being their Grammy. At the end of the day, it is not the big events, but these simple, love filled moments that remind me of how truly blessed I really am.
“Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.” Proverbs 17:6
