Grateful & Blessed


In the midst of the storm with no electricity, water, heat and some of the vinyl siding ripped off my house, my friend Bev said “you’re always so positive. Love that about you”, when I was in ICU, she said you always have faith. Deuteronomy 31:8 says “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Philippians 4:19 says My God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Mark 11:24 says “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. These are just some of the scriptures that strengthen my faith. Lately the hits keep on hitting and I’d be lying if I said I haven’t gotten discouraged from time to time, but I realize that’s just the enemy kicking me when I’m down. 

This morning is a perfect example of God’s faithfulness and love for us. He used a couple to bless us. Gordon & Maureen, came over to our house and Gordon fixed the siding on our house, wouldn’t let us pay him and they were just so gracious. Other than FB posts, I have not seen Maureen since we graduated together in 1984. Thinking about it, I truly believe God knew then, way back when Maureen & I were in high school, that he would use her and her husband one day to bless Mike & me. Truthfully we are strangers, but even the visit with Maureen while her husband worked on the house, was like no time had passed. We are so grateful for their generosity and kindness. We are also grateful for all of those who have reached out to offer help, you know who you are and we love and appreciate each and every one of you. 

If you are still reading this, do something kind for someone, just a random act of kindness. Always pay your blessings forward. I do often and trust me, it always comes back ten fold. We may not be rich, Mike isn’t healthy, our house is not the prettiest or sturdiest, but all our needs are met. We have a roof over our heads, we have food in the fridge, we have healthy, successful, grown children, the most beautiful & amazing grandkids we could have ever imagined. Good friends & coworkers, a job I love… the list goes on and on. No matter what the circumstances, God is good, he does provide and his plans are always better than ours. I don’t know why some of the things that happen, happen but when the hits keep hitting and things look hopeless, I always remember the scripture “Trust in the lord with all your heart and lean NOT on your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5. God is faithful.

Another Day, Another Procedure and a Whole Bunch of Feelings

  Another day spent at Portsmouth Hospital with Mike. Today he had a Fistulagram also known as a Fistulography. It’s an imaging test where they insert a needle and dye and do some imaging to make sure the fistula in his arm is working properly before they can remove the Central Venous Catheter (CVC) which he has had since February. Since Mike has stage 5 kidney disease, this Fistula is a life line for dialysis. He did well during the procedure, even though there was a lot of pressure and discomfort. The test showed that he had scar tissue built up from a previous antibiotic picc line, so they had to open it up with a balloon. He was in the operating room for about an hour and in recovery for another hour. Starting Tuesday, the nurse’s at the dialysis center will try using the arm Fistula for the next 3 sessions. Once it is proven to be working properly, an appointment will be scheduled to get the CVC removed from his chest. He can’t wait to get rid of that thing.  Another upda...

Update in the Michael Health Chronicles

  As I posted on Friday, Mike’s dialysis fistula placement surgery went well. He had a bit of a tough weekend. Dialysis on Saturday was a bit rough between the fatigue and pain from the surgery the day before. We are grateful it all went well though, a step in the right direction. But, in true Mike fashion, it’s one step up and two steps back. On Saturday we got notice from Lahey Clinic saying that Mike will not be put on the kidney transplant list at this time, as we suspected but it’s still disappointing. After all the tests he went through, his team of doctors determined that he is too high risk at this time and would more than likely, not survive the surgery. He is still considered fragile and has to continue to gain some strength back as well as get his broken back fixed. They will retest everything and reassess in January.  We will not give up, we still trust God’s plans for us no matter what they are. The winds have changed a bit so we must adjust the sails.
